Reading at home is vital if children are to make progress with reading. We expect children at school to read every day.  Not only is reading a great way to relax but it also a fantastic way of transporting yourself to alien lands, or helping you to become an expert on something. Whether you enjoy reading huge novels, magazines or even comics, there is always something to learn.  Home reading is most effective when time is set aside with no distractions. Many people choose to read just before bedtime, but this isn’t a rule. It could be as soon as you get in, or even after you’ve had your tea.  It also helps children to talk with a grown up about what they are reading – even for the more confident readers. Take time to share your child’s reading book – whether they are in Reception or Year 4.   Please encourage your child to fill in their Reading Record book every time they read so that we can celebrate their achievements. The record books are also a great way of communicating with us in school.

Information: What are Book Bands?

We are often asked about Book Bands. The image below shows the colours or “bands” that books are grouped in at school. Generally speaking, children in Reception will start on Book Band 1, and gradually work through the Book Bands as they progress through school. Some children will move through the bands more quickly than others, but a Book Band 11 (Lime) usually indicates that your child is fairly independent at reading, and this is often reached between the ages of 7.
